Beginner's Guide to Cigars: What to Know Before Your First Smoke

Thinking about trying your first cigar? You're in the right place. Cigars can seem intimidating at first — the terminology, the rituals, the choices — but once you understand the basics, it becomes one of life's most enjoyable and relaxing experiences. This guide covers everything you need to know to get started with confidence.

What Makes a Premium Cigar?

Unlike cigarettes, premium cigars are made entirely from natural tobacco — no additives, no chemicals, no shortcuts. A hand-rolled cigar like those made at Indalo's factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, consists of three parts:

  • The wrapper: The outermost leaf. It contributes significantly to flavor and appearance.
  • The binder: A leaf that holds the filler together inside the wrapper.
  • The filler: A blend of tobacco leaves at the core that determines the cigar's body and strength.

The quality of each component — and the skill of the roller — determines the overall experience.

Choosing Your First Cigar

For beginners, start mild. A lighter cigar lets you enjoy the flavors without being overwhelmed by nicotine or intensity. Our Connecticut Single Cigar is the perfect starting point — smooth, creamy, and approachable, with a slow, even burn.

As you develop your palate, you can explore bolder options like our Habano or Maduro wrappers. Our 5 Count Variety Box is a great way to try multiple wrappers and discover what you enjoy most.

How to Cut a Cigar

Before you light up, you need to cut the cap — the closed end of the cigar. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Straight cut: The most common method. Use a sharp guillotine cutter to remove about 1/16" from the cap. Clean and simple.
  • V-cut: Creates a wedge-shaped notch. Concentrates the draw slightly.
  • Punch cut: Removes a small circular plug from the cap. Good for smaller ring gauges.

The key is to cut cleanly and not too deep — you want to open the draw without unraveling the wrapper. A quality cutter makes all the difference. Browse our cigar accessories for cutters that get the job done right.

How to Light a Cigar

Lighting a cigar properly is an art. Here's how to do it:

  1. Toast the foot first. Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and bring the flame close to the open end (the foot) without touching it. Rotate the cigar slowly to heat the tobacco evenly.
  2. Take slow, gentle puffs. Once the foot is glowing, place the cigar in your mouth and draw slowly while continuing to rotate over the flame.
  3. Check the burn. Look at the lit end — it should be glowing evenly all the way around. If one side is burning faster, gently rotate the cigar to even it out.

Use a butane lighter or cedar matches for the best results. Avoid regular lighters or candles, which can impart unwanted flavors.

How to Smoke a Cigar

  • Puff slowly. Take a draw every 30–60 seconds. Smoking too fast overheats the cigar and makes it harsh.
  • Don't inhale. Unlike cigarettes, cigar smoke is meant to be savored in the mouth, not inhaled into the lungs.
  • Let the ash grow. A long, firm ash is a sign of quality tobacco. Let it grow to about an inch before gently tapping it off.
  • Rest it, don't stub it. When you're done, simply rest the cigar in an ashtray and let it go out on its own. Stubbing it out can release unpleasant odors.

How to Store Your Cigars

Cigars need to be kept at the right humidity — ideally 65–70% relative humidity and around 65–70°F. Without proper storage, they dry out and lose their flavor. Options include:

  • A humidor: The gold standard for cigar storage. Browse our humidor selection.
  • A Ziploc bag with a Boveda pack: A budget-friendly short-term solution for small quantities.
  • The original box: If you're smoking within a week or two, keeping cigars in their original box in a cool, dark place works fine.
